Dr. Susan Rashid: [00:00:07] Today, we are honored to have Dr. Jack Michel join us. Dr. Michel will share his rich experience in the field of internal medicine and medical education. Dr. Michel, I give the microphone to you. Tell us about yourself.
Dr. Jack Michel: [00:00:26] I'm an internist and I finished at the University of Miami School of Medicine and then trained in Internal Medicine. I've been at Larkin Hospital for the last 22 years as a as the Chairman of the Board and involved in medical education, mainly that's what I'm doing right now, I'm the designated institution official for the hospital.
Dr. Susan Rashid: [00:00:48] What specific area of medicine fascinates you the most?
Dr. Jack Michel: [00:00:52] Education. I mean, training the next generation of healthcare providers. I mean, I think that's something that I was I was chief resident at UM (University of Miami) as well when I when I trained there and I liked that and I almost stayed as faculty, but then I went into private practice, always thinking that I wanted to go back to education so that to me, that's, that's really what drives me, it's, it's the ability to take someone and make them in an internist, a family medicine doctor, and then see them serving the community.
Dr. Susan Rashid: [00:01:27] Tell us the story of how you've made such a positive impact on medical education and graduate medical education in South Florida.
Dr. Jack Michel: [00:01:39] Absolutely. We started from zero back in 2010. And we now have two, one hospital which is a statutory teaching hospital and another one that's in the process of becoming one, with a total of 400 residents in 30 different specialties, including most of the medical specialties. And then in addition to that, I'm also the founder of Larkin University, which is a non-for-profit university that has a College of Pharmacy and a College of Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Susan Rashid: [00:02:09] That's so incredible, Dr. Michel. I consider myself to be fortunate. I'm a fully-fledged family medicine physician today, and I sincerely thank you for choosing me to be in your program at that time period. Thank you.
Dr. Jack Michel: [00:02:26] Absolutely. You, I'm very proud of what you've done and will continue to do so. You're one of our most distinguished alumni.
Dr. Susan Rashid: [00:02:35] Before I graduated from medical school, in March of 2012, Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami, Florida extended a formal invitation to interview me for their family medicine residency position. The interview went splendidly, and I got selected to be one of the family medicine residents for Larkin Community Hospital, and I started the Family Medicine Residency program on July 1st, 2012. I graduated from the program on June 30th, 2015. Little did I know, at that time, just how much this hospital would come to mean to me. It was with Larkin that I found my new home away from my Minnesota home. Throughout my journey, I've been so blessed to build beautiful friendships with the Larkin family, and it has been a beautiful gift. And within that family, the star of the show is Dr. Jack Michel. He is a true beacon of light and hope, lighting the way for all of us to reach for the stars. Under his mentorship and guidance, I had the courage to take chances and pursue my dreams. Now, here I am in 2023, living in a world of possibility, delivering high quality primary care health care services for the community, especially those who are most in need, and the medically underserved populations, as well as accomplishing two degrees from Harvard Medical School. I would not be where I am today had it not been for Dr. Jack Michel. And I know that I am not the only one that feels this way. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers throughout the years that graduated from Larkin feel the same way about Dr. Michel. We are all forever grateful to Dr. Michel for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to receive our graduate medical education training from Larkin Health System. Dr. Michel has created an extraordinary legacy of excellence in medical education with Larkin Health System, and it is my great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to interview him for this podcast show as he shares his trail blazing plan of action in navigating the COVID 19 pandemic.
